My overnight stint at Emmanuel with Nancy was uneventful. The Family Promise bus doesn't have a driver at weekends so Nancy and I had to get them back to the Day Centre, so that their bedrooms could be cleaned and turned back into childrens' classrooms, before our morning services started. Fortunately a guy, a member of the church came in at 7 and did the heavy lifting. Nancy drove the mini bus - I'd made it clear to all that I don't drive anything bigger than my own car and even if I could, I'd be terrified of the responsibility of driving children. As I grow older I can feel my confidence draining out of me. So I drove behind the bus to bring Nancy back to Emmanuel for her own car.
I went home to briefly catch up with Bubbles before leaving at 9.30 for Oklahoma City. Rosalyn composes music. She also played the organ for many years at the Universalist Church in Santa Monica, California. I think it was these two facts that led the Unitarian Church in Oklahoma City to have a 'Rosalyn Kalmar' Sunday where three of her compositions were played and sung. They were lovely and she was so pleased and excited to hear her music sung so beautifully. And I was glad to have made the effort to go. They did invite me to go with them - they know I rarely drive outside Shawnee - but I knew they had been invited to lunch and I didn't want to feel I was gatecrashing, so with the help of my Garmin GPS, and Google, I managed it. I should have taken more notice of Google though, their route looked very straight forward - straight along the interstate then only a couple of turnings from the exit, whereas the GPS led me all round the houses in downtown OK City. I wonder why it does that - always takes the longest, most convoluted route?
Anyway, the Unitarian service was very nice. They don't mention God, Jesus or the Bible very much, their emphases seems to be more on creation and the environment (I thought there can't be any Republicans in this church, they are all opposed and hostile to anything green or environmental).
I took a couple of pictures.
The Altar. The circle with the lamp is their symbol. It had a candle burning in it during the service.
The Choir singing one of Rosalyn's pieces.
After the Service I made my way - with the help of the GPS - to a big Borders bookshop I'd discovered when Larry was in hospital in the City. Sadly, it has been hit by these hard economic times and is closing down. I bought a couple of books by a Christian fiction writer I am very into at the moment, but everyone else was coming out with armloads of stuff.
Finally, I decided to drop off a few things I had for Mark and Mary. Their postal address is Tecumseh, but they are so far away from civilisation the roads aren't paved, and they are not even on the Google or GPS radar. Fortunately I had carefully preserved the hand written directions I had.
I got home in the middle of the afternoon and I was TIRED. I fell asleep as soon as I lay down, and I didn't go anywhere else. I missed the Nutrition/Diet class, and I didn't go to the evening service at University Baptist.
