This morning I was helping in a fund raising event at the Senior Centre. One of the paid staff had to have a hysterectomy, and although she was insured they still have to meet what is called their 'co-pay'. Also she was going to be off work for six weeks, and not being a nanny state like us, or the rest of Europe, this is what they have to resort to for health care.
I offered to help and Kate asked if I could make fried bread. I was on the point of saying sure I could when I remembered that Indian fried bread is not a slice of Mother's Pride in the frying pan. A couple though decided to get up early and make it in their kitchen and keep it warm in the Senior Centre. The Indian supermarket donated the meat for the tacos. I wish I'd taken a picture of the tacos, I don't know why I didn't.
I introduced the concept of a raffle. I told Kate that every fund raising event in England, from the church coffee morning to a celebrity gala dinner has its raffle. They raffle things here - if one of the quilters donates a quilt for a raffle, for example, but they don't have them at fund raising events.
I went round the hospital in the afternoon, and this evening went to the movies with Pattisue and saw 'Happy Feet Two', an animated film about penguins.
Pattisue had her chemo postponed again, she is going to have surgery next Friday on a skin lesion on her face.
