MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY

It has been a holiday today.  What we would call a bank holiday; not up there with the 4th July, Thanksgiving or Memorial Day; people haven't been descending on Walmart trundling crates of watery beer out to their cars (it has to be less than 3.5% alcohol to be sold in a supermarket) just a day off sort of holiday.

So in the spirit of the holiday I lounged in front of the television all day, watching back to back episodes of the trashy reality show 'Wife Swap'.  It might be trashy but it fascinates me to see how other people live.   I was doing some needlework as well, it wasn't a total waste of time.

By the evening though I was ready for some exercise and took off for the water walkway at the Pool.  It was busier than I had ever seen it, there must have been about a dozen people there, but they started leaving when the childrens' gizmos were turned off at 7.45.

I picked up a meal from the Golden Corrall and ate it looking at the Republicans' latest debate.   Someone was complaining that one of the candidates hadn't released his income tax return for scrutiny.  Wouldn't we consider that an invasion of privacy if our prospective MPs had to release their tax returns to the general public?  Or perhaps they do and I just didn't know.

The outcome of this election is pivotal.  If the Republicans get in they will repeal Obama's Health Care and the US will be back on the path of capitalism.   Conversely, if Obama gets back they will forever be a socialist nation, like we are in Britain and Europe.

I was talking to Kate, the manager of the Senior Centre because we were both brought up in socialist nations - she is from Canada - and I commented with some bewilderment on the fact that socialism here is a dirty word.  The worst insult one can throw at Obama is to accuse him of being a socialist.  She said it is because Americans equate socialism with the former Soviet Union and all its evils.

I noticed the bruising on my toes is lessening, but I think I must have crushed the toes, I wish I could have an x-ray just so I'd know, but people say that there isn't much that can be done with toes.  I am not walking any better, and feel I have aged about 10 years since I hurt myself.
