I woke up to very heavy rain this morning, gushing out of the sky, and was glad not to be picking up the donuts. I think everyone was pleased to see the rain though, we have been on a wildfire alert for the last few days as it has been hot with strong winds. Also to people suffering from allergies the rain is a welcome relief.
The Kiwani speaker was the newly appointed head football coach at Oklahoma Baptist University. College - and High School - football is a BIG DEAL here, and OBU, which is mainly known for its basketball team, is just getting its football team together. I found the coach's talk very interesting, he has been going out and about to different states signing up, and offering scholarships, to potential players.
The Lenten lunch today was held at the Lutheran Church, which serves the best church food in Shawnee. Normally - in the spirit of Lent - we don't expect more than a bowl of soup, but they had a proper meal, with two or three main courses and a choice of twelve desserts. They have some very good German/American cooks in their church, and they also raise money by having monthly lunches as well.
The Service prior to the lunch was very good too. As today is the Jewish festival of Purim, the pastor paraphrased, in an entertaining way, the story of Esther. The Jewish people always read the Book of Esther on Purim.
I have been out and about quite a bit today. This evening I went to a Sustainable Shawnee meeting at Emmanuel because the speaker - from OG&E, the electricity company - was giving a Power Point presentation on the new smart meters which have just been fitted to homes in Shawnee.
It costs more for electricity during peak periods of high demand - between June and September when temperatures can reach triple digits , and between 2 and 7pm - so the Smart Hours Price Plan allows customers to save when costs are lower. Consumers will also be given advance notice of the next day's peak price, based on the weather, and sent to one's phone, text, or e-mail. All very high tech, but it sounds useful, as are suggestions like pre cooling homes in off peak times instead of running the air conditioning in peak times. The company will also track, and inform customers, of their savings.
Yesterday, Wednesday, I went to Sandra's Lenten group at Emmanuel. I thought it was Spring Break this week so didn't do anything about a dessert for a meal, so I was distracted by the sound of children playing outside, and cooking smells wafting from the kitchen. After the group I went to the kitchen and apologised for the lack of dessert, but Tim Sean said they had some Girl Scout cookies they would serve.
