Back to picking up the donuts from Tecumseh. I left just after 7 when it is just beginning to get light, and it was a nice drive seeing the sun come up. The skies, the sunrises and sunsets in Oklahoma are lovely. The only place anywhere like it in England is East Anglia where Constable painted his masterpieces.
It is the same when I am in the YMCA pool at 7. I can watch the sunrise through the floor to ceiling windows.
The weather is lovely here too at the moment. It has gone from brutally hot to summer, with blue skies and warm days.
Oklahoma State University has an office in Shawnee and among its activities are occasional cookery lessons and demonstrations, and I went to one this evening. Sharon picked me up as it was in Tecumseh. We were cooking 'Comfort Food'. The instructor starts with a talk then everyone is paired up and given a recipe. The recipes are all different, and when we finish cooking we sit down and taste them all. I had to cook the only recipe I didn't want to eat. Acorn squash stuffed with turkey sausage (retch, vomit). The other dishes were very nice though. Shepherds pie, macaroni and cheese, chicken and dumplings, mini meat loaves. The chicken and dumplings were particularly nice. In this part of the world the dumplings are usually wide noodles, but the teacher comes from Georgia where they make dumplings like I recognise.
It seems an incredible amount of work for the teacher to do, having to set it all up in the Tecumseh library and get some of it going to cut down on the cooking time, but it is a very enjoyable evening.
